BKG WS continues to support CARE in Africa

LUDWIGSHAFEN, GERMANY, December 2012 — The worldwide water treatment provider, BKG Water Solutions intensifies its social commitment in the Horn of Africa. Together with CARE, an experienced, globally acting humanitarian organization, we decided to continue our support for the world’s largest refugee camp in Dadaab, Kenya.

BKG Water Solutions - an ICL business unit - continues to support CARE program in the Horn of Africa

Due to the most severe drought in 60 years, hundreds of thousands of people had to leave their homes in the Horn of Africa in summer 2011. Despite worldwide attention and media coverage, the situation has not improved considerably. In the light of slim chances of repatriation for the Somali refugees and ongoing security threats, lifesaving assistance needs to go on. People who found shelter in Dadaab still depend on continuous aid by the UNHCR, the Kenyan government and international aid organizations.

“Water is the essence of life and human dignity and the situation in the Horn of Africa is far from being solved” said Jordi Verdés, Business Director of BKG Water Solutions, “so in this context it is a natural choice for us to continue to join CARE’s efforts in increasing access to clean water and constructing systems for water sanitation in the refugee camps through the WASH program” he continues.

WASH program – Water, Sanitation and Hygiene

The aim of CARE’s WASH program is to provide safe water and to reduce the health risks of water-related diseases. Projects also include educating people about good hygiene practice, which reduces the risk of illnesses. From August 2011 up to July 2012 with the support of BKG Water Solutions, CARE has been able to complete the following activities:

Construction of 13 school water tank platforms using masonry structures
Construction of 8-stance boys and 10-stance girls latrines at the new Wadajir Pri school in Dagahaley
Fencing of six dumpsites in Dagahaley camp and six dumpsites in IFO camp
Construction of seven water treatment tank platforms in IFO camp
Seven Water Refugee water quality monitors were trained on water quality monitoring
Construction of five tap stands in Hagadera camp
Pipeline extension of 234 meters in Hagadera camp

One year on, with the help of BKG Water Solutions, CARE can consolidate its WASH activities in Dadaab, e.g. replace old and low-yielding boreholes, construct 150 m³ elevated water tanks, extend the water pipe network, hygiene promotion and education.

BKG WS support CARE in Africa

LUDWIGSHAFEN, GERMANY, December 2011 — BKG Water Solutions continues its social engagement. This year our support is dedicated to the people suffering from drought and hunger in East Africa. Together with CARE, an experienced worldwide active humanitarian organization, we decided to support the water supply and sanitation improvement in the world’s largest refugee camp, located in Dadaab, Kenya.

BKG Water Solutions supports CARE programme against the drought and food crisis in the Horn of Africa

The Horn of Africa region is experiencing the most serious food crisis in the world today. Successive seasons of failed rains, combined with increasing food prices, underdevelopment, poor governance, conflict and limited humanitarian access have resulted in food insecurity, water shortages and acute malnutrition. The Horn of Africa region now received heavy rains that have led to flooding and an increase in cases of waterborne disease, like cholera. Over 13.3 million people are in need of urgent assistance.

Water, Sanitation and Health

CARE helps on the spot with mobile water tanks and also develops a decent water infrastructure. The goal of these projects is to provide safe water and to reduce the health risks of water-related diseases. Projects also include educating people about good hygiene practice, which reduces the risk of illnesses. In Dadaab, CARE

distributes daily 7.5 million liters of drinking water
built and maintains 170 km of water pipes
established 480 water points
educates in sanitation, provides hygiene packages

To support the people in Dadaab and the growing number of new refugees, BKG Water Solutions has decided to join CARE‘s efforts in constructing and maintaining systems for water distribution and sanitation in the camps, e.g.

Boreholes for springs and submersible pumps
Electric generators, generator buildings
Deep tanks and tank trucks
Water pipes and water-tap supports

“We share with CARE the common goal of global responsibility”, said Jordi Verdés, Business Director of BKG Water Solutions, “We were delighted to be able to make a donation to such a worthwhile organisation“, he continues, “The money was raised through the committment of the entire company.“

Organized by the European Desalination Society (EDS) in association with Asociación Española de Desalación y Reutilización, the conference will be devoted to advances towards providing fresh water for all at affordable cost and with economic energy requirements. It will overview the most recent technical developments in desalination technology, its cost and extent of application, including socioeconomic and environmental issues.The place of industry research and government decision-making will be addressed, as will the reasons for desalination to be integrated into national or regional water management plans. While, Barcelona is an important cultural centre, the € 230 million El Prat de Llobregat desalination plant, which will supply Barcelona with 200,000 m³/d of potable water was opened in July 2009, will be another attraction.

Ferrocid® 4601 - New oxidizing Biocide brought to life

Biological life has in water and especially cooling systems ideal conditions to grow: right Temperature, high amount of Nutrients and a lot of Sunlight. But biological life and the resulting biofilm can lead to enormous problems in industrial water systems. The reduction of the heat transfer and even a blocking of the system can occur. Under biofilm the biological induced corrosion is favored. And further a not well treated water system can be the source for diseases.

Ferrocid® 4601 - New oxidizing Biocide brought to life" />Therefore a good biological control of a water system is essential. Biocides should have a good performance in water systems and a very low environmental impact when discharged.

Ferrocid^® 4601 is a newly developed and fast reacting Biocide of our R&D department. It is a single component, stabilized, oxidizing source of Bromine. The new product yields to improved results in alkaline cooling systems especially compared to Sodium Hypopchlorite. Ferrocid^® 4601 is free of Chlorine and has a wide range of application.

Ferrocid^® 4601 inhibits the microbiological growth and eliminates existing micro-organisms, like bacteria, fungi, and algae. It is also active in the control of Legionella pneumophila bacteria, which causes Legionnaire's disease (Legionellosis). Ferrocid^® 4601 gives very good results in systems with high risk of process contamination.

Compared to conventional treatment for alkaline cooling systems (Sodium Bromide with Chlorine gas resp. Bleach) there is no need for an expensive mixing station (including two dosing pumps) but just a single dosing pump. The monitoring can easily be done by Halogen sensors.
