BKG WS support CARE in Africa

LUDWIGSHAFEN, GERMANY, December 2011 — BKG Water Solutions continues its social engagement. This year our support is dedicated to the people suffering from drought and hunger in East Africa. Together with CARE, an experienced worldwide active humanitarian organization, we decided to support the water supply and sanitation improvement in the world’s largest refugee camp, located in Dadaab, Kenya.

BKG Water Solutions supports CARE programme against the drought and food crisis in the Horn of Africa

The Horn of Africa region is experiencing the most serious food crisis in the world today. Successive seasons of failed rains, combined with increasing food prices, underdevelopment, poor governance, conflict and limited humanitarian access have resulted in food insecurity, water shortages and acute malnutrition. The Horn of Africa region now received heavy rains that have led to flooding and an increase in cases of waterborne disease, like cholera. Over 13.3 million people are in need of urgent assistance.

Water, Sanitation and Health

CARE helps on the spot with mobile water tanks and also develops a decent water infrastructure. The goal of these projects is to provide safe water and to reduce the health risks of water-related diseases. Projects also include educating people about good hygiene practice, which reduces the risk of illnesses. In Dadaab, CARE

distributes daily 7.5 million liters of drinking water
built and maintains 170 km of water pipes
established 480 water points
educates in sanitation, provides hygiene packages

To support the people in Dadaab and the growing number of new refugees, BKG Water Solutions has decided to join CARE‘s efforts in constructing and maintaining systems for water distribution and sanitation in the camps, e.g.

Boreholes for springs and submersible pumps
Electric generators, generator buildings
Deep tanks and tank trucks
Water pipes and water-tap supports

“We share with CARE the common goal of global responsibility”, said Jordi Verdés, Business Director of BKG Water Solutions, “We were delighted to be able to make a donation to such a worthwhile organisation“, he continues, “The money was raised through the committment of the entire company.“

We hope that the donation of BKG Water Solutions will help CARE to develop and improve the water supply and sanitation in Dadaab and make the life of all refugees a little easier.

Ferrocid® 4601 - New oxidizing Biocide brought to life

Biological life has in water and especially cooling systems ideal conditions to grow: right Temperature, high amount of Nutrients and a lot of Sunlight. But biological life and the resulting biofilm can lead to enormous problems in industrial water systems. The reduction of the heat transfer and even a blocking of the system can occur. Under biofilm the biological induced corrosion is favored. And further a not well treated water system can be the source for diseases.

Ferrocid® 4601 - New oxidizing Biocide brought to life" />Therefore a good biological control of a water system is essential. Biocides should have a good performance in water systems and a very low environmental impact when discharged.

Ferrocid^® 4601 is a newly developed and fast reacting Biocide of our R&D department. It is a single component, stabilized, oxidizing source of Bromine. The new product yields to improved results in alkaline cooling systems especially compared to Sodium Hypopchlorite. Ferrocid^® 4601 is free of Chlorine and has a wide range of application.

Ferrocid^® 4601 inhibits the microbiological growth and eliminates existing micro-organisms, like bacteria, fungi, and algae. It is also active in the control of Legionella pneumophila bacteria, which causes Legionnaire's disease (Legionellosis). Ferrocid^® 4601 gives very good results in systems with high risk of process contamination.

Compared to conventional treatment for alkaline cooling systems (Sodium Bromide with Chlorine gas resp. Bleach) there is no need for an expensive mixing station (including two dosing pumps) but just a single dosing pump. The monitoring can easily be done by Halogen sensors.

On 3 and 4 November: Practice-oriented training session at the Wastewater center Löhnberg in Germany. We take part with a lecture on “Application and use of starch-based flocculation aids”.

On 3 and 4 November the Wastewater center Löhnberg (Arbeitsgemeinschaft Abwasserzentrum Löhnberg) in Germany organizes a practice-oriented training session for staff, planners and operators of industrial water and wastewater plants. It takes place at the Congress and Convention Centre Seepark Kirchheim, 36275 Kirchheim / Hessen (Germany).

Water purification support for Vietnam Red Cross

In October 2010, flooding in Vietnam caused severe loss and damage. The floods affected a total of 25 districts in the five provinces of Quang Binh, Ha Tinh, Quang Tri, Nghe An and Thua Thien Hue in central Vietnam.

Water purification support for Vietnam Red Cross" />Ludwigshafen, Germany – 26/11/2010: BKG Water Solutions decided to answer to the appeal of Vietnam Red Cross Society (VNRC) to support affected people in Quang Binh, Ha Tinh, Quang Tri, Thua Thien Hue and Nghe An, with the distribution of water purification tablets through VNRC. The donation of these disinfecting tablets, which remove micro- organisms from water, enables to provide 40 Million liters of safe drinking water to the affected population, and therefore to prevent diarrhea, cholera and other water related diseases resulting from contaminated waters.

Furthermore, BKG Water Solutions funded the organization of specific training program about water usage, disinfection techniques, health, and nutrition advices.

Support for drinking water production in Pakistan

Ludwigshafen, Germany – September 13, 2010 – In view of the dramatic floods in Pakistan and the difficulty for the local population to get fast help, BKG Water Solutions has decided to support Pakistan with the distribution of water purification tablets through several local humanitarian agencies, such as GOAL agency, National Rural Support Programme (NRSP), GlobalMedic and Red Crescent.

Support for drinking water production in Pakistan" /> Support for drinking water production in Pakistan" />The donation of these disinfecting tablets, which remove micro- organisms from water, enables to provide 40 Million liters of safe drinking water to the affected population, and therefore to prevent diarrhea, cholera and other water related diseases resulting from contaminated waters.

The victims of the floods still need emergency relief. For example the Irish agency GOAL is helping local Pakistani organizations to support emergency evacuation of people, deliver food, shelter aids, hygiene kits and water purification tablets to population in the north of Sindh province. The NRSP has existing office infrastructure in almost all affected districts. It has enabled to respond in both central and more remote areas. As of September 1, 2010, through its emergency rescue and relief operations, the NRSP has assisted 377,983 households in the flood affected districts of Khyber, Pakhtoonkhawa and Punjab.

We hope that the donation of BKG Water Solutions through these highly active humanitarian aid agencies will contribute helping some of those most affected.

Successful participation at the food industry suppliers trade show in Rennes, France.

The Food Industry Suppliers’ Trade Show (CFIA) took place on 9 to 11 March in Rennes (France) and close to 11,000 professionals visited the CFIA this year. Visitors came with specific and concrete investment projects in mind therefore we are able to support them now finding solutions for saving water and energy, recycling waste water or, more generally, for implementing sustainable development.

Besides our shared booth with Anti-Germ and Laboratoire Anios we participated to the conferences with a lecture "Water Treatment for Sterilization and Pasteurization systems", which was well received by the visitors.
